The Governors of Quebec

• James Murray was the first governor of Quebec and was a long-serving military general in the British Army
• the royal proclamation made by Murray didn't please the small minority of English Canadians who were mostly merchants in Montreal
• Murray was called back to great Britain and never saw Canada again
• The replacement and new governor was Sir Guy Carlton
• 1774, Britain replaced the constitution with the Quebec Act
• Change of Empires: The transition from French to British domination resulted in an appreciated improvement in the standard of living for French Canadians
