Neuronal communication

Cards (16)

  • What is the mammalian nervous system divided into?
Central nervous system and Peripheral nervous system
  • What is the CNS?
Consists of the brain and spinal cord
  • What is the peripheral nervous system?
Consists of all the neurones that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.
  • What is the PNS split into?
Somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
  • What is the somatic nervous system?
This is controlled consciously for voluntary muscle movements.
  • What is the autonomic nervous system?
Is controlled subconsciously, for involuntary activities i.e heartbeat and digestion
  • What is the autonomic nervous system divided into?
    Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system
  • What's the sympathetic nervous system?
Activates the 'fight or flight' response. Increases activity levels.
  • What's the parasympathetic nervous system?
Activates the 'rest and digest' response. Decreases activity levels.
  • What neurotransmitter is used by the parasympathetic nervous system?
    Acetylcholine
  • What neurotransmitter is used by the sympathetic nervous system?
    Noradrenaline or adrenaline
  • Describe the mammalian nervous system.
It is divided into the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The PNS is divided into the somatic and autonomic nervous system. The SNS involves conscious control and the ANS involves subconscious control. The ANS is then divided into the sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system, which have opposite responses.
  • What neurones are found in the CNS?
Relay neurones entirely and the cell bodies of motor neurones
  • What neurones are found in the PNS?
Sensory and the axons of motor neurones
  • What are the effector organs of the somatic nervous system?
    Skeletal
  • What are the effector organs for the autonomic nervous system?
Smooth muscle, glands and cardiac muscle
