• five primary precepts are; preserve innocent life, live in ordered society, worship god, reproduce, educate children
• real and apparent goods are argument action is only moral if it is real and comes from good intention.
• Double effect is theory of sacrificing a primary precept if it enhances another.
• four tiers are; external, Devine, natural and human law
• aquinas argues for the intention of the action. Human actions are too complex to stick by absolutist rules
• strength is it is efficient since rules are applied to everyone equally
• strength because although it is absolutist, double effect allows for best outcome and takes into account complexity of humans
• Strength for religious believer since it derived from Christianity
• Weakness, atheists don't worship god, that doesn't mean they aren't morally good.
• Weakness, reproduction is not always the best thing to do if child is brought up in not a loving environment.
• weakness, it is outdated and doesn't answer modern day challenges
• strength: Hobbes argues we are inclined to do bad so natural law is needed as a moral guide
• weakness: mill says people should have full autonomy over their body and actions
• weakness, it encourages a fixed mindset
• NL comes from reflection of the natural world however our conclusions about the world haven't always been correct
• aquinas brought natural law from religious roots to secular law
