  • What does Ecclesiastes 12:12-14 say/mean? How does it provide moral advice?

"Fear God and keep his commandments"
It means that morality entails fearing God and follow his commandments (10 Commandments). God's word is the right way to be a good person. If you do not follow God's law, it is immoral and you should fear judgment. We should fear God's impending judgment and keep it in mind. Examples, parable of the sheeps and the goats.

"Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful"
It provides moral advice by saying that we should mirror the merciful characteristics, we should be inspired by God's attributes in order to be moral. Christians may demonstrate being merciful by showing compassion or forgiveness to others. For example, feeding the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, give shelter to travellers, visit the sick, visit prisoners, and bury the dead (7 corporal acts of mercy).

as one rejoices in great riches.
    I meditate on your precepts"

I will not neglect your word"

  • What does Psalm 119: 105-112 (Nun) say/mean? How does this provide a guide for living?
"Your word is a lamp at my feet, a light on my path."
"I have taken an oath, and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws"
"The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts"
"Your statutes are my heritage forever,
they are the joy of my heart"
"My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end"
Nun means that she finds the word of the Bible as a source of illumination in her life. It serves as guidance on her path (of life). It also shows that following the word of the Bible will bring joy into people's lives. So, it is a guide to living a happy life too, if you do not stray from what it says.
  • What does Genesis 1: 26-28 say/mean? How does this provide meaning and purpose of life?
"Let us make mankind in our own image, in our likeness"
We are made in the same image of God, and we possess the same qualities.
"So that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and all the creates that move along the ground"
God created humans to have dominion over all other animals (implications of speciesism), we may use animals for however we want because we 'rule' over them?
"Be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it."
God instructs humans to populate the earth, and bring the earth under control (quieten or overcome).

This all provides a meaning and purpose of life for humans because it places humans with a task of dominion over the world, and other species in it. It implies that we are made with the same qualities of God, we should reflect those in our dominion of the world. It also gives humans incentive to procreate, to take over or bring under control the earth.
  • What does Ecclesiastes 9: 5-9 say/mean? How does this provide meaning and purpose of life?
"For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing"
"Never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun"
"Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do"
"Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil" importance of Christian practices
"Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of meaningless life that God has given you under the sun- all your meaningless days."
"For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labour under the sun"
These lines show the finite nature of life. So, it gives meaning and purpose of life when it says to enjoy your life. God instructs us to be happy by doing things we love: 'eat your food with gladness, drink your wine with a joyful heart'. Yet, it also stresses the need to continue Christian practices (wearing white and anointing oil) in life. Even days that seem 'meaningless', have meaning because God has provided them. We may suffer in hard or tedious work in life, but we still should enjoy life.
  • What does Psalm 43: 1-3 say/mean? How does this give comfort and encouragement?
"Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation"
"O deliver me from deceitful and unjust man"
"For thou art the God of my strength"
"O send out thy light and thy truth, let them lead me"
This extract describes someone's struggle amongst the sin and nature of man, in a nation that does not believe in God, or does not represent the qualities of God. He concludes that the antidote to discouragement and despair in the face of negativity is hope in the Lord and trust in his teachings. This brings comfort and encouragement because Christians can see from this that, they may suffer, or not be supported in their faith, but they can trust in the influence of God (figurative light) through his teachings/words in the Bible.
  • What does Matthew 6:25 say/mean? How does this give comfort and encouragment?
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear."
"Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothes?"
"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them?"
Look to the world around you and see how animals act. Humans do not need to care about trivial things, God will look after them as he does animals.
"Can any one of you, by worrying, add a single hour to your life?"
This extract means that we should not worry about trivial things and look to how animals behave. God is telling us that worrying about things is futile, nothing will come from it. This gives comfort and encouragement because it shows that struggles that Christians worry about should not be dwelled upon, God will look after them as he does animals, who do not worry about things.
