  as the amount of unemployed people grew the amount of money the gov received from tax fell but the amount needed to pay out on unemployment benefit went up and so they raised taxes on workers and cut unemployment benefits

  some people had lost their savings in shares so they lost all their money - if they were unemployed, they had no savings to help themselves

  taxes went up and with so many desperate for jobs, employees cut wages
• homelessness


  many people could not afford their rents and became homeless

  shanty towns in parks developed - people relied on soup kitchens
• street violence


  theft increased

  fights often broke out between police and youth groups
• confidence in the Weimer Republic went down as it couldn't deal with the problems the great depression brought
