Cardiogenic Shock

Cards (2)

  • Non-rhythmic complications of acute MI - Cardiogenic Shock pt1:
    • Cardiogenic shock occurs as a result of a substantial functional loss of the myocardium resulting in a severely compromised cardiac pump
    • Damage to approximately 40% of the ventricular wall may precipitate shock and circulatory failure, particularly when it is the left ventricular wall that is damaged
    • Cardiogenic shock is associated with an extremely high mortality ~ 80 - 90%
  • Non-rhythmic complications of acute MI - Cardiogenic Shock pt2:
    • The clinical picture is one of low cardiac output and an inadequate compensatory total peripheral resistance leading to a compromised blood pressure and therefore poor organ perfusion i.e. profound hypotension, cold, cyanosed peripheries, sweating, mental torpor, oliguria, breathlessness, acidosis, hypoxia, acute cardiac failure, arrhythmias
