  • Define ethical issues
    -when a conflict exists between the rights and dignity of the ppts and the aims of the research
    -Researchers must follow the BPS code of conduct
  • Define informed consent
    -when ppts agree to and should be made aware of the aims procedures and their right to withdraw before taking part
  • Outline how presumptive consent is a way of obtaining consent
    -rather than getting consent from the ppts themselves a similar group of people are asked if the study is acceptable
    -if this group agree then consent of the og ppts is "presumed"
  • Outline prior general consent
    -ppts give their permission to take part in a number of different studies including one that will involve deception
    -by consenting ppts are effiectively consenting to be deceived
  • Outline retrospective consent
    -ppts are asked for consent during debriefing after already taking part in the study
  • What happens when vulnerable people do not have relatives to give consent researchers will seek consent from an ethics committee
    -researchers will seek consent from an ethics committee
  • Outline deception
    -ppts should be deliberately mislead
    -ppts must be fully debriefed at the end
  • Outline protection from harm
    -ppts should not be exposed to any more risk than they would be in everyday life
    -if harm has been caused counselling should be offered as part of the debrief

    -ppts anonymity and privacy must be respected and names should not be recorded
