  • specialised cells: a cell that is adapted to carry out a specific function
  • SPERM CELLS:
    • have a tail to swim to the egg cell
    • many mitochondria to release energy for movement
    • a streamlined shape and enzymes in the acrosome in the head to penetrate the egg cell
  • EGG CELLS:
    • have a jelly layer surrounding the cell
    • after fertilisation, the layer hardens to prevent other sperm from entering
    • cytolplasm is filled with nutrients
  • EPITHELIAL CELLS:
    • line tubes such as the trachea
    • have a lot of cillia to move mucus containing dirt and bacteria away from the lungs
    • also found in the oviducts, moving things across the cell surface.
  • SMALL INTESTINE CELLS (VILLI):
    • found where digested food is absorbed
    • finger like extensions which increase the surface area of the small intestine.
