- creative writing tips:. show not tell. paragraphing (try and use a one sentence or one word paragraph). varied vocab, sentence types and starts, sentence lengths and punctuation ( ; : - () ...) (you will get more points for using an ellipsis in the middle of a paragraph instead of at the end). flashbacks. language techniques ( simile, metaphor, personification, imagery!). cyclical structure. zoom in on setting and character descriptions. use a short time frame. one word sentence!. double adjectives. try using dashes or brackets instead of commas where you can
