Sex-role stereotypes

Cards (3)

  • Evidence for sex role stereotypes
Smith and LLoyd (1978)- found that adults gave an infant a gender-stereotyped toy based on what clothes they were wearing and not their actual sex. E.g. gave boys dress in stereotypical girls clothes and doll to play with and vice versa.
  • Sex-stereotypes changing
Now encouraged to bring children up gender neutrally (lack temporal validity)
  • Negative impacts
    . Individual opportunities
    . Promoting sexist assumptions
