LAB EQUIPEMENTS

Cards (36)

  • Mortar and Pestle
Used to crush up solid chemicals into smaller pieces or to grind solids into a fine powder. Facilitates the dissolution of solids into solvents when making solutions
  • Funnel
Used for separating solid substances from a solution. Can be made of ceramic or plastic and is used for filtering
  • Watch Glass
Circular concave piece of glass used in chemistry as a surface to evaporate a liquid, hold solids while being weighed, for heating a small amount of substance, and as a cover for a beaker
  • Graduated Cylinder
Piece of laboratory apparatus used to measure the volume of liquids, chemicals, or solutions. More accurate and precise than laboratory flasks and beakers
  • Water Bath
Laboratory equipment used to incubate samples at a constant temperature over a long period of time. Preferred heat source for heating flammable chemicals instead of an open flame to prevent ignition
  • Iron Ring
Used to hold separatory funnels and secure funnels when filtering or pouring liquids into narrow joints
  • Spatula
Used to transport and distribute dry chemical compounds. Allows for collecting very small quantities of chemicals at a time, often used when weighing chemicals on a balance
  • Iron Stand

Supports the iron ring when heating substances or mixtures in a flask or beaker using a Bunsen burner. Clamps can also be used to hold glassware on the iron ring
  • Burette Clamp
Scientific equipment used specifically to hold and secure a burette on a stand for experiments. Can be made with materials such as plastic and cast iron
  • Iron Clamp
Used to secure an extension-type utility clamp to a support stand or ring stand in a lab
  • Erlenmeyer Flask
Used to contain liquids and for mixing, heating, cooling, incubation, filtration, storage, and other liquid-handling processes. Their slanted shape allows for easy swirling and mixing
  • Erlenmeyer Flask
Used to contain liquids and for mixing, heating, cooling, incubation, filtration, storage, and other liquid-handling processes. Their slanted sides and narrow necks allow the contents to be mixed by swirling without the risk of spills, which is useful for titrations and for boiling liquids
  • Using a lamp clamp in a lab
Used to secure an extension-type utility clamp to a support stand or ring stand
  • Pipette
Laboratory instrument used to measure out or transfer small quantities of liquid, in volumes of milliliters (mL), microliters (μL)
  • Laboratory apparatus
    • Lamp
    • Clamp
    • Erlenmeyer Flask
    • Aspirator
    • Pipette
    • Thermometer
    • Evaporating Dish
    • Test Tube Brush
    • Test Tube Rack
    • Bunsen Burner
    • Fish Tail
    • Beaker
    • Crucible and cover
  • Evaporating Dish
Glassware containers used for laboratory testing. They are used for the evaporation of liquids and solutions to produce a solid substance or concentrated solutions. Dishes have a shallow flat round surface to promote evaporation
  • Aspirator
Separates foreign material from granular product by means of spreading flow over an intake cone. The thin stream of material is introduced to a controlled current of air that passes through the material as it falls
  • Thermometer
Used to measure the boiling point and freezing point during science experiments. It is also used to measure the temperature of substances
  • Test Tube Rack
Piece of laboratory equipment used to hold multiple test tubes upright at the same time. They are especially useful for organizing test tubes when different solutions are being worked on or collected at once
  • Test Tube Brush
Brush used for cleaning test tubes and narrow mouth laboratory glassware, such as graduated cylinders, burettes, and Erlenmeyer flasks
  • Bunsen Burner
Ambient air gas burner used as laboratory equipment; it produces a single open gas flame and is used for heating, sterilization, and combustion
  • Fish Tail
Used to bend glass as it spreads out the heat over a larger area, making it more uniform. A porcelain spatula is used in laboratory applications where scratching delicate surfaces is undesired as well as scooping up small quantities of powder
  • Beaker
Cylindrical glass or plastic vessel used for holding liquids. It is a multi-purpose piece of equipment used for containing a chemical reaction, measuring liquids, heating them over a Bunsen burner's flame, or collecting them in a titration experiment
  • Crucible and cover
    A crucible
  • Crucible
Laboratory glassware designed to melt or burn solid chemicals over a burner
  • Cork Borer
Metal tool for cutting a hole in a cork or rubber stopper to insert glass tubing
  • Goggles
Tight-fitting eye protection that completely covers the eyes and provides protection from chemical splashes, impact, and dust

Used for adding chemical solutions to a reaction vessel to minimize the risk of a reaction occurring too quickly and bubbling over
  • Test Tube
Used by chemists to hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals, especially for qualitative experiments and assays
  • Platform Balance
Used for weighing objects, with two platforms and weights placed on one platform until they balance the object being weighed
