  • Robert Owen: Welsh Textile Manufacturer. Founder of Utopian Socialism. Early socialist, co-operative and utopian thinker. "Father of British socialism" Wanted to modify classical liberalism. Not just interested in running a successful business. Keen on improving working conditions and life of the workers. Believer that man was shaped by his surroundings. Thus felt it was his duty a manager to offer education and respectable surrounding for his extended family. Better working conditions = harder working workers.
  • Robert Owen: Built a school at his facotry. Banned corporal punishment. Restricted employment of children under 10. COnflict with his part about profitability vs social concerns (continued to be profitable) New management -> increase productivity. Disappointed with the Factory Act of 1819.
