  • Ethical issue:
    • a dilemma about right and wrong.
  • BPS code of ethics and conduct:
    the four ethical considerations:
    • respect - includes informed consent, right to withdraw, confidentiality, privacy.
    • competence - includes awareness of professional ethics and making ethical decisions.
    • responsibility - protection from harm and debriefing.
    • integrity - includes honesty, avoiding deception and addressing misconduct.
  • Ethical issue 1 - informed consent:
    given comprehensive information about the nature and purpose of the study and their role in it.
    • to reduce demand characteristics, researchers might not give participants informed consent so it doesn't affect participants behaviour and maintain meaningfulness of research.
  • EI 2 - confidentiality:
    participants right to have personal information protected .
    • it may not be possible to keep information confidential, because some details of study might give away identification.
  • EI 3 - privacy:
    right to control the flow of information about themselves.
    • researchers may not want to alert participants they are being observed to prevent change of behaviour from participants.
