  • Surgical Interventions to Manage Acute Coronary Syndromes - Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI):
    • the same procedure as a PCI, but is an immediate treatment for acute myocardial infarction with ST elevation (STEMI)
    • When a person presents with acute myocardial infarction the priority is to “re-perfuse” the area affected, as without this re-perfusion there is prolonged hypoxia which will result in further myocardial damage and tissue death
    • If a supply of oxygen can be restored, then this will result in less likelihood of muscle damage and preservation of pumping function
  • Surgical Interventions to Manage Acute Coronary Syndromes - Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PPCI):
    • The two main ways of re-perfusing the myocardium are:
    • use of thrombolytics
    • PCCI
