Social support

Cards (3)

  • What does social support suggest?
The presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can help others to do the same. It breaks the unanimous position of the majority. People are more confident to resist if they have someone to join them.
  • What is a strength of the social support theory?
It has been seen in the past that having others join you gives you more confidence to resist to pressures of conformity and obedience, e.g., protests. This is a strength as it has real life application.
  • What is a weakness of the social support theory?
It only looks at one factor causing resistance, e.g., someone else speaking up first, giving you confidence in the first place. This is a weakness as it suggests that it is reductionist by only looking at external factors.
