• researcher  still manipulates the IV  and record effects on the DV but conducted in real life setting
• strength:

  • High ecological validity 
  • Behaviour more valid and authentic 
• weakness:

  • Less control over extraneous variables
  • Harder to replicate them because they are less controlled 
  • Possible unethical issues if ppts are unaware they are being studied
