  • What is the theoretical model of processing behaviour?
A representation of our internal mental process stages using diagrams.
One type is the informational processing model which suggests that information flows through cognitive systems in stages. These stages include processes like input, storage and retrieval of information.
  • What are the key assumptions of the cognitive approach?
All behaviour can and should be studied scientifically.
Behaviours can be understood through the study of internal mental processes and how we process information.
Internal mental processes are private operations of the mind, they can't be seen and act as mediation processes.
Mental processes can be regarded as information processing machines, similar to a computer.
  • How is a schema not useful?
It can distort interpretations of sensory information
  • What is the computer model of processing information in the cognitive approach?
Software simulations of internal processes which try to mimic how the human mind works. If programming a computer with instructions produces a similar output to humans we can assume that similar processes are going on in the human mind.
  • How is a schema useful?
It prevents us from being overwhelmed by environment stimuli. It's a quick mental shortcut.
  • What is inference?
A guess that you make or an opinion that you form based on the information that you have.
    UP SCALED:
Reaching a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
  • What is a schema?
Ideas/beliefs/expectations that act as a mental framework to interpret new information that is received. They develop through experience.
Schema of a birthday party: Cake, balloons, party hats, etc.
  • If programming a computer with instructions produces a similar output to humans what can we assume from this?
That similar processes are going on in the human mind
