Bourdeiu

Cards (7)

  • BOURDEIU says that the education system is made by the ruling class to help them succeed.
He shows this through the Cultural reproduction model.
  • He expresses this through Habitus (taste), Field (cultural framework) and Cultural capital (value a person’s cultural knowledge has within a field)
  • The education system achieves this by altering their cultural knowledge, dress sense and language.
  • Contemporary Applications include School policies on uniform, Teachers judgements, OFSTED and Curriculum (is based on middle-class knowledge).
  • AO3 CRITICISMS: Functionalists say that education is meritocratic, not classist.
  • AO3 CRITICISM: Children should not be automatically socialised into value consensus. Skills are needed to achieve this. Students acquire cultural capital throughout their education
  • AO3 CRITICISM: There is no evidence to support his theory. It is just an assumption.
