U3 Why are natural environments important to I and S

Cards (20)

  • Biome- Area or envrionment classified by the animals/Plants that lives there
  • Terrestrial biome - Biomes that are land base and influenced by temperature and rainfall
  • Aquatic biomes - Biomes with a habitat that are dominatd by water
  • Freshwater biomes - Biome with less than 1% salt concentration in the water with two categories called "Lotic" and "Lentic"
  • LOtic: flOwing water habitat such as rivers and streams
Lentic: Still water such as lakes and ponds
  • Marine biomes - Biome with more than 1% of salt concentration of water that are divided into 5 parts
  • Values of Biomes
    1.Essential resources - Sources for human survival/development
2.Food security - Habitats for food and plants which is he bases of our food supplies
3.Health and well-being - Nature providing improvement of mental health. Medical plants provided for modern healthcare
4.Cultural Heritage - Biomes are necessary to form the cultural identity and hertage for indigenour communities
5.Climate Resilience - Builds resilience from natural disasters and climate change
  • Some threats to biomes:
    • Illegal Wildlife trade - Animal extinction/Deterioration of a equilibrium in the ecosystem(reduced biodiversity)
    • Pollution of environment - Impact on human food/toxic soil
    • Deforestation - Increased greenhouse gas/habitat loss
    • Climate change - droughts/rising sea levels
  • Trophic cascade - An ecosystem collapse that cause the deterioration of a balanced food web due to the reduction of the top predator
  • poaching - Illegal taking of wildplants/animals of their parts
  • Natural resources in DRC - White SAP, rubber, uranium, cobalt, copper, diamonds
  • Maritime effect - Sea having a cooling/heating effect on land depending on the temperature of the water
    1. Latitude: climate can differ from the latitude of the location, becomes more inhospitable as close to north or south.
    2. Distance from the sea:The maritime effect can cause the differeing climate for biomes
    3. Altitude - Higher the biome is located above sea level, the colder the temperature is.
    4. Ocean currents(movement of water) - Make the location have a more temperate climate than other areas of the same latitude.
  • Biodiversity - The variety of different species of organisms in a particular area, making the ecosystem more resillient and balanced
  • Type of biodiversity
    1. Ecosystem diversity
    2. Species diversity
    3. Genetic diversity
  • keystone - specific species that supports the whole ecosystem and holds the environment together
  • The biome with a high percipitation and low percipitation are most likely to be a grassland
  • Capital of drc - Kinshasa
  • Gauchos - A Nomadic Horsemen that worked in Argentina and Uruguay
  • What are the two types of Aquatic biomes?
    Freshwater biome and Marine Biomes
