  • Smoking. Smoking can lead to a buildup of plague which can damage the arteries. This can lead to cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, asthma.
  • Alcohol. Impaires decision making (increase risk of injury from crashing car if intoxicated). Increases risk and burden of disease with: Cancer, liver disease, injury
  • High body mass index: Causes a strain on the heart. (makes the heart work harder by making it pump more blood) Increases the risk and burden of disease associated with: Type 2 diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, heart disease
  • High Intake of fat: fat stores excess energy in the body. can contribute to atherosclerosis. (by promoting the buildup of plaque in the arteries) This can lead to increased rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, increase rates of colorectical cancer
  • High intake of salt: doesn't contain energy, but draws fluid out of cells and increases blood volume. Increases rates of hypertension and heart attack and stroke
  • High intake of sugar: Sugar provides a quick source of energy for the body. contains energy which is converted to fat if not used. (weight gain) Increased rate of infections, kidney disease, oral cancer, obesity
  • Low intake of fibre: Fibre creates feelings of fullness. People are more likely to feel hungry. Leads to higher rates of colorectal cancer
  • Low intake of iron: Iron is essential for carrying oxygen in the blood. Can cause low levels of haemoglobin in blood. Can cause higher rates of anemia
  • Under consumption of vegetables: Vegetables provide nutrients such as fibre. Can lead to low intake of fibre. (fibre is a carbohydrate found in plant based foods that the human body cant fully digest) Increased rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease and some cancers
  • Under consumption of fruit: Can contribute to a deficiency in vitamins and minerals, including folate. (folate is a vitamin that your body needs to grow and develop) Increased rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, some cancers
  • Underconsumption of dairy foods: required to maintain strong bones. contributes to low intake of calcium which is increased rates if osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, colorectical cancer, type 2 diabetes
