ROLES OF PHLEBOTOMIST

• The main role of a phlebotomist is to collect blood samples for laboratory testing or for transfusion.
• Properly label collected blood samples with the necessary data to identify the patient
• Deliver or transport collected samples within appropriate prescribed time limits.
• Centrifuge and aliquot samples ready for laboratory analysis.
• Assist in collecting other specimens such as urine and other non-blood samples
• Effective interaction with patients and hospital personnel
• Performance of computer operations and record-keeping pertaining to phlebotomy
• Observation of all safety regulations, quality control checks, and preventive maintenance procedures
• Attendance at continuing education programs
