Fear and relaxation cannot happen at the same time
Symptom substitution
Treatments for phobias don't treat the underlying cause, only the symptoms. This can lead to the symptoms being "substituted" to another phobia by associating the unconditionedresponse (fear from the traumaticevent) with another neutralstimulus (another phobicstimulus) instead of the original, which creates another phobia. This makes the treatments less effective.
