• A situational explanation of obedience focuses on the external circumstances rather than to the personalities of the people involved
• Legitimacy of authority is an explanation for obedience which suggests we are more likely to obey people who we perceive to have authority over us. This authority is justified by the persons position of power within a social hierarchy.
