• hate crimes:

  -sexual offences act 1967 decriminalised homosexuality

  -criminal justice act 2005 said that hate crimes would be punished more severely

  -race relations act of 1968 made it illegal to refuse jobs or housing because of someone's race
• domestic violence:

  -Domestic violence act 1976 gave victims the right to ask for an injunction against a violent partner

  -in 1991 courts ruled it was possible to prosecute a man for rape inside a marriage

  -in 2014 controlling and coercive behaviour towards a partner was made a crime
• abortion:

  -until 1967 abortion was illegal and dangerous backstreet abortions were performed

  -the Abortion act of 1967 legalised abortion if the child was going to have serious disabilities or if the mother was at risk
• driving offences:

  -driving a horse drawn coach while drunk became a crime in 1872

  -it became illegal to drive a car drunk in 1925

  -in 1967 a new law set a maximum alcohol intake limit for drink driving

  -attitudes towards drunk driving in the 1970's were quite lenient
• drug taking:

  -the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 made many drugs illegal for the first time
• terrorism:

  -in the 1970's and 80's the IRA used violence to campaign for Irish independence

  -Al-Qaeda and ISIS have been responsible for acts in Europe
