• Early prophase:

  1. chromosomes condense making chromatids visible
  2. centrioles move to the cells poles
• Late prophase:

  1. nuclear envelope and nucleus disappear
  2. spindle fibres attach to the centromere
• Metaphase:

  1. chromosomes line up on the equatorial plate
• Anaphase:

  1. centromeres split
  2. chromosomes separate and are pulled apart to opposite poles
  3. spindle fibres shorten
• Telophase:

  1. chromosomes decondense
  2. nuclear membrane reforms
  3. spindle disappears
  4. DNA starts to uncoil
• Cytokinesis:

  1. cleavage furrow forms in animal cells
  2. membrane pulled inwards
  3. cytoplasmic division
  4. protein filaments contract
