  • Samuel Smiles (1812-1904): Scottish Author and Government Reformer. For individualism. Don't help the poor. Used his own life experience as an example. Was poor, orphan, factory workers, paid his way through school and became a doctor, eventually started his own business and became very wealthy. Poverty was not the fault of economy (capitalism), rather it was within the person as they didn't work hard enough or save their money. Thriftiness is better, being dependent on others including the government will encourage laziness. Hard work.
  • Who were the Classical Liberals Against helping the poor?
Thomas Robert Malthus, David Ricardo, Samuel Smiles
