• Church of England was under Elizabethan settlement and country was predominantly calvinist protestant
• Charles loved ceremony, order and conformity
• Accused by his subjects of favouring catholicism which was untrue but he did favour Arminianism/Laudianism
• Promoted clergymen sympathetic to his aims and politicisation of clergy exposed them to political attack
