  • 5 Roots of Usul ad-Din in Shia Islam:
    • A l Ma'ad - belief in the Day of Resurrection
    • T awhid - belief in the oneness of Allah
    • A dalat - belief in Allah's justice
    • I mamate - belief in the 12 imams
    • N ubuwwah - belief in the prophets
  • Al Ma'ad:
    • belief in the Day of Resurrection
    • humans will be physically resurrected to be judged and asked to account for their actions
    • "Allah will resurrect those in the graves" (Qur'an)
    • "on the Day of Resurrection, Allah will judge between you" (Qur'an)
    • influences Muslims to live in accordance with the Qur'an which is the infallible word of Allah
    • e.g: praying 5 times per day
  • Adalat:
    • the belief in Allah's justice and fairness
    • they will believe that Allah may act in ways beyond their understanding, but the world has been designed to be fair
    • "Allah will not burden you with more than you can bear" (Qur'an)
    • Muslims will persevere through suffering as Allah's Al Qadr (foresight) and adalat (justice) mean he knows they are able
  • Imamate:
    • the belief that all modern imams should be descendants of the prophet
    • "I have left you two treasures: the Qur'an ... and the Ahl al-Bayt" (2 Treasures Hadith)
    • imams are seen as infallible and protectors of faith
    • Muslims will follow the guidance given by the imamate as they are the only ones able to interpret scriptures and they have ismah (protection from sin)
