modern societies based on nation states and national identity - economy is capitalist and status achieved through individual effort eg. work hard in school and go uni.
social identity based on work and social class
modernity - period of enlightenment - desacrilisation period and popper falsification emerged.
sociological theories developed as part - idea society can progress though science and rationality
postmodern society characterised by diversity, choice and uncertaincy - truth is relative and society is no longer understood by meta narratives with no value consensus
postmodernity driving factor is globalisation and manufacturing jobs replaced with service economy due to technological changes - people construct their own identity through consumption and society is fragementated with individual choice - loss of faith in science seen as cause rather than solution
MODERNITY
identity based on work and social class - fairly predictable and unchanging formed by social structural factors eg. social class, gender, work
w/c = manual factory work - low paid
m/c= professional jobs - high pay
POSTMODERNITY
individuals construct their own identities - identity less certain and predictable as its made through consumption with 'pick n mix' multiple identities being able to change whenever - individualism
2. MODERNITY
sociological theories tried to explain society scientifically - positiviststructural theories (functionalism, marxism) use same methods as science - quantitive data to see cause and effect relationship
2. POSTMODERNITY
positivistsstructural theories cant explain PM society as it doesnt consider the whole or fragmentation in PM society - many diffeent groups, interests constantly changing with uncertaincy - no value consensus
