  • Alley - extension of the court on the sides for doubles play
  • Back Alley - back boundary line and the long service line for doubles
  • Backcourt - back third of the court in the area of the back boundary lins
  • Center Line - centerline that divides the court into right and left courts
  • balk (Feint) - any deceptive movement that disconcerts an opponent before or during the service
  • Baseline - back boundary line at each end of the court parallel to the net
  • Carry - illegal tactic, also called as sling or throw
  • Center or Base Position - location in the center of the court to which a singles player returns the ball.
  • Clear - a shot hit deep to the opponents back boundary line
  • High Clear - a defensive shot
    Attacking Clear - offensive shot
  • Court - area of the play
  • Drive - fast and low shot that makes a horizontal flight over thenet
  • Drop - shot hit softly and with finesse to fall rapidly and close to the net
  • Fault - violation
  • Flick - quick wrist and forearm rotation
  • Forecourt - front third of the court
  • Hairpin Net Shot - shot made very close to the net
  • Halfcourt Shot - hit low and to midcourt
  • Kill - fast downward shot that cannot be returned
  • Let - legitimate cessation of play for a rally to be repleayed
  • Long Service Line - the back boundary line
  • match - series of games
  • Midcourt - the middle third of the court
  • Net Shot - shot hit from the forecourt that just clears the net and then falls rapidly
  • Push Shot - gentle shot played by pushing the shuttle with little wrist motion
  • Racquet - used to hit the shuttlecock
  • Rally - exchange of shots
  • Serve (Service) - used to put the shuttlecock on the net, and to serve the ball.
  • Service Court - area hich the serve must be delivered
  • Short Service Line - line from the net which a serve must reach to be legal
  • Smash - hard-hit overhead shot
  • Wood Shot - the shuttle is hit by the frame; legalized in 1963
