  • Dutch (Boers) arrived in 1652, led by Jan Van Riebeeck; they were farmers - who disrupted local land use, especially the Khoi tribe
  • Dutch (Boers) were more technologically advanced (guns), combat advantage, so they moved further inland (into the cape) called “Trek Boers” - they believed God was on their side (Christian) and all land was theirs to take
  • In 1795 the British arrived by 1806 they had taken over the government leading to Boer vs. British (conflict), major technological disparity
  • British Empire abolished slavery in 1834, Boers think this hypocritical as the Boer and British views say blacks are beneath them, as whites
  • British pushed Dutch settlers north-east (“Great Trek”) in 1836, a result of the slavery ban - less successful Boers migrated, those benefiting from the British trade stayed

  • South Africa had some segregation pre-1948; blacks were forced into roles that placed them in a disadvantage and forced them to live in undesirable places - the government only cared to listen to the white population
