  • Karl Marx (Extreme Left): German Philosopher. Radical form of socialism, scientific socialism or communism, AKA Marxism. History is the story of evolving class warfare. Only way to overthrow capitalism was by means of class struggle between the proletariat (workers) and the bourgeoisie (owners).
  • Karl Marx wrote the communist Manifesto with Engels. Believed in a Command Economy/Centrally Planned Economy.
  • The communist movement was underground as it was a radical and violent movement.
  • Marx believed that something needed to be done for factory workers. Without government intervention all abuses to the workers that occured in the IR would continue.
  • Communist Manifesto: Abolition of private property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax. Abolition of all right of inheritance. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels. Centralization of credit in the hands of the state by means of a national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the state. Equal obligation of all to work.
  • Communist Manifesto: Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country. Free education for all children in public schools, abolition of child factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production. 
  • Socialism vs. Marxism
    Shared common views, differed greatly in the ways that their goal of transforming liberal capitalist society should be achieved. Socialist - peaceful, Communist/Marxist - violent. Thus socialism which favoured reform was more popular.
