Cards (6)

  • Aim
to investigate whether treating treatment resistant people with antidepressants and CBT is more effective than just antidepressants
  • Method
469 participants from Bristol, Exeter and Glasgow with treatment resistant depression
had been taking antidepressants for more than 6 weeks and still had symptons
    randomly assigned to a condition
    condition 1 = antidepressants only
    condition 2 = antidepressants + CBT
  • Results
after 6 months 422 participants left
condition 1 = 21.6% had more than 50% reduction in symptoms
condition 2 = 46.1% had more than 50% reduction in symptoms
after 12 months 396 participants left
  • Conclusion
CBT + antidepressants are more effective than antidepressants alone
  • strength
    real life application
findings of the most effective treatment for depression can be used so more people can receive effective treatment for their symptoms to manage mental health
  • weakness
-use of self report methods decreases validity
used questionnaires to find out severity of depression and participants could have shown social desirability (lying)
    -high drop out rate
16% of people dropped out as it took lots of effort to target their feelings and also a lot of time for the therapy to work
