Literary Techniques
Specific, deliberate constructions of language which an author uses to convey meaning
Allusion
Used as a reference to another object outside the literary work.
May be historical, biblical, geographical, or may refer to characters, events, or places in other works
Foreshadowing
Hints about events that will happen later in a narrative
Idiom
Phrase or expression that has acquired a figurative meaning different from its literal meaning
Irony
Emphasizes the difference between the way things are expected to be and the way they actually are
can also mean the difference between what might be expected
Theme
Central topic or idea explored in a literary work
Can be about love, poverty, morality, etc.
Tone
Attitude or approach of the author or characters that gives the general atmosphere created in the story
Mood
Emotion or emotions provoked in the reader
