  • Official statistics shows that men are more likely to be victims that women, particularly violent crimes. However, the Islington Crime Survey found that women were far less likely to report violent crimes, like domestic abuse, and are more likely to be repeat victims.
  • Men are more likely to be victims of violence where the perpetrator is a stranger. Women are more likely to be victims of domestic violence (twice as likely) and sexual assault (seven times as likely). Women are however, more likely to know the perpetrator.
  • Males account for 7 out of 10 murder victims and are most likely by killed by stranger.
  • Between April 2020 and March 2021, 177 women were murdered in England and Wales, compared to 416 men (ONS.) Of these women, 109 were killed by a man and 10 by a woman. In 58 cases there was no known suspect. This means that -where the suspect was known - 92% of women were killed by men in the year ending March 2021.
