Practical Investigation

Cards (25)

  • What is the aim?
To investigate whether there is a relationship between average sleep hours and average aggression score as measured from a self-report questionnaire
  • What are the fully operationalised covariables?
Sleep- average hours and minutes out of 12 across three nights
Aggression -average score on aggression questionnaire out of 145 on the self report questionnaire
  • What is the alternative hypothesis?
The one tailed hypothesis is that there is a significant negative relationship between getting more sleep and aggression whereas sleep mean hours out of 12 across three night decreases aggression scores out of 145 increase
  • What is a null-hypothesis?
There will be no significant relationship between sleep hours out of 12 across three nights and aggression scores out of 145 any relationship will do due to chance
  • What type of sampling is used?
    Opportunity sampling
  • What apparatus will you need?
Buss Perry questionnaire and a smart watch
  • What is the procedure?
Monitor sleep for three nights using a self report questionnaire to monitor aggression levels
  • What were the controls?
    Same days
Clear rule - define sleeping and waking up and track using the same apparatus
  • What are the results?
The mean hours of sleep is seven hours and 14 minutes
The median is seven hours and 12 minutes
The mode is seven hours and three minutes
The range is three hours and 58 minutes
And the SD is one hour and seven minutes
    For sleep
  • What are the results for aggression?
    Mean is 81
    Median is 72.5
    Mode is 98
    Range is 72
    SD is 19.7
  • Why would you use a Spearman's rho test?
    Non-parametric
    Ordinal data
    Test of correlation
  • Explain generalisability
Is low because they were only 22 participants meaning it was a small sample size

This is because they're only 22 participants in our psychology class

Meaning that the sample was ethnocentric as we only use people in one class and only 22 people
  • Explain reliability
It is high because we use the standardise procedure

However, it can be low because we used to self report data - which can lead to social desirability

We use the same three noises to track sleep and we use the same questionnaire

This means it has high reliability however Friday to Sunday is a narrow range in sleep
  • Explain application
It is high because we can apply this in prisons and schools

This is because we can use our data to see if aggression levels linked to sleep

This means we can use our data to see if aggression links to the hours
  • What is acquiescent bias?
You agree just to gain a reward
  • What was the Aim of your Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - To investigate the correlation between amount of sleep and aggression levels.
  • Who were the Sample for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - 10 psychology students aged 16-17
    - 3 males, 7 females
  • How was the Sample Collected for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - Volunteer sample in class.
  • What was used to Collect Data in the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - Self reports of sleep to the nearest hour the previous night and self reported aggression questionnaire to find aggression score.
  • What was the Research question for Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - What is the relationship between sleep and aggression ?
  • What was the Informed Consent Request for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - Told ppts we are about to do a correlation on sleep and aggression.
    - The correlation will take about ten minutes.
    - You will not be shown anything offensive and have the right to withdraw your results at any time.
    - Do I have your consent to take part ?
  • What was the debrief for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - You have just taken part in a study looking at the relationship between sleep and aggression.
    - Thank you for participating.
    - Your names will not be used in the study to ensure confidentiality.
  • What was the Observed Value for the Spearman's Rho test for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - 0.215
  • Were the results significant and what does this show for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - No as the observed value of 0.215 was lower than the critical value of 0.648
    - This means that no significant relationship was found between the amount of sleep and level of aggression shown by participants.
  • What is the A03 for the Biological Psychology Practical ?
    - (-) Small sample size
    - (-) Social desirability while filling in self report.
    - (+) Informed consent was gained
    - (-) People may not accurately know how many hours of sleep they got.
    - (+) quantitative data so objective and easy to compare.
