  • jihad - the struggle against evil this could be an inward personal struggle to avoid temptation to do evil and struggling to follow muslim teachings or a collective struggle of muslims together struggling against evil

    • personal inward struggle of all muslims to live according to muslim teachings. for example praying 5 times a day and observing ramadan

    • outward struggle to defend your faith, family and country from threat e.g battle of badr when muhammad fought against his enemies from mecca

    • greater jihad has the greatest effect on the daily life of a muslim
    • everyday they must focus on avoiding evil and temptation which will mean they avoid things such as drugs, drink, alcohol, greed and jealousy

    • greater jihad also means a muslim will struggle to show their obedience and faith in god for example by observing all 5 pillars of islam this is particularly difficult during ramadan when a muslim will fast during daylight hours

    • constant struggle in a muslims daily life to avoid evil, follow muslim teachings and avoid temptation
    • showing devotion to god and helping others
    • some muslims learn the quran off by heart and some focus on charity work
  • lesser jihad :
    • less important
    • outer struggle of defending islam from threat
    • war can only be declared by a religious leader
    • can’t be used to make people convert
    • not be used to gain land or wealth
    • must be the last resort
