  • Education
Another way in which some Ethnic Minority groups experience social inequality in the USA is through educational inequalities.
The neighbourhood in which each school community is placed can determine education experiences of students who attend. Many schools in poorer neighbourhoods are under-resourced, under staffed, and do not provide a suitable standard of education. This can impact on the overall educational attainment of some Ethnic Minority Groups.
  • Education - Example & Analysis
While only 23% of Blacks and 16% of Hispanics have a Bachelor’s degree or more, 54% of Asians do.
This evidences the gap in educational attainment within the USA, preventing Black and Hispanic Americans from progressing into high paying and skilled careers, leading to income inequalities - creating a cycle of inequality rooted in the system of education.
  • Education - Rebuttal
While disparities in educational attainment among different racial and ethnic groups in the United States persist, recent data indicate a trend toward narrowing these gaps.
The government has placed a certain focus into the educational disparity that exists across the USA, and they have implemented policies and solutions - such as Increased Funding for Schools in Underserved Areas, Affirmative Action and Diversity Programs and Early Childhood Education Programs - that have been effective in tackling the inequalities created by educational attainment.
  • Education - Rebuttal (Example & Analysis)
For instance, from 2012 to 2022, high school completion rates increased across all groups - with Black American completion rate increasing from 85% to 90.1%, and that of Hispanic Americans increasing from 65% to 75.2%
With an increase between 5 - 10% among all ethnic groups in America, this shows the shift towards educational equality that has occurred in the last year, suggesting progress in educational attainment among Black and Hispanic populations.
  • Education - Evaluation
The increasing high school completion rates among Black and Hispanic populations indicate progress, though further work is needed to close the gaps in higher education attainment, and therefore there are still significant effects of inequality placed on these ethnic minority groups in American society.
