Ejection Fraction Reduced Heart Failure

Cards (2)

  • ejection fraction reduced heart failure is associated with:
    • post acute myocardial infarction - loss of myocardial contractile mass
    • myocardial remodelling post acute myocardial infarction
    • filling is not a problems, so end diastolic ventricular volume is preserved
    • contraction is limited, so theres a relatively compromised stroke volume
    • so stroke volume (ejection) is a relatively low % EDVV (filling) - ejection fraction is reduced
    • due to poor force production (despite reasonable filling) cardiac output is low
  • ejection fraction reduced heart failure:
    • ejection fraction is reduced
    • cardiac output is inadequate
    • this means there is a problem with emptying - systolic failure
    • e.g. a low SV of 40 instead of a normal 70, and a normal EDVV of 120
    • 40/120 = 33%, which is lower than what EF should be (70%)
