  • Researchers quantify and analyze the presence, meanings, and relationships of words and concepts in texts to make inferences about the messages within the texts, the writer(s), the audience, and the culture and time
  • Types of texts for content analysis
    • Books, newspapers, magazines, speeches, interviews, web content, social media posts, photographs, films
  • Types of texts broadly defined
    • Books, book chapters, essays, interviews, discussions, newspaper headlines, articles, historical documents, speeches, conversations, advertising, theater, informal conversation
  • Types of texts in a single study
    • Student and teacher interviews, writing journals, classroom discussions, lectures, out-of-class interaction sheets
  • To conduct content analysis, texts are coded or broken down into manageable categories on various levels such as word, word sense, phrase, sentence, or theme, and then examined using conceptual analysis or relational analysis
  • Contextual analysis involves the systematic analysis, identification, sorting, organization, interpretation, consolidation, and communication of contextual user work activity data gathered in contextual inquiry for the purpose of understanding the work context for a new system to be designed
  • Perspective Analysis is a detailed examination of a person’s point of view or outlook on a given topic
