Alfred the Great

• Alfred strengthened defences across England to make it more secure.
• Kingdoms in England saw Alfred as the overlord and under his rule the Anglo-Saxons began to refer to themselves as English.
• Alfred's descendants managed to recapture parts of the Danelaw but Viking presence / influence still remained.
• Alfred translated many important texts from Latin to English and introduced several social and political reforms.
• Alfred promoted learning and literacy.
