• 1. Bateson et. al (1956) suggested communication difficulties within families (especially between parents and children) were associated with symptoms of schizophrenia
• 2. Children exposed repeatedly to conflicting messages are unable to ignore them or respond appropriately to them
• 3. This may lead to a risk of developing schizophrenia
