5: Expressed emotion

• 1: George Brown joined the MRCSP in 1956. At the time the antipsychotic Chlorpromazine was used widely. Patients were stabilised in hospitals and then discharged but many would relapse
• 2: Brown (1959) studied 156 men with schizophrenia following their discharge
• 3: relapse was strongly connected to the type of home patients were discharged to
• 4: those discharged to live with parents or wives were more likely to relapse than those discharged to lodgings/siblings
• 5: Brown conducted interviews with parents and wives concluding that the amount of EE was related to the likelihood of relapse
