Neurological Integrity Testing (Lumbar Spine)

  • Neurological Integrity Testing (Lumbar Spine) - all Must be performed:
    • starts by performing a Babinski and Clonus reflex (sees if problems comes from upper motor neurone or lower motor neurone)
    • then test Dermatomes - an area of skin thats supplied by a nerve root
    • then test Myotomes - group of muscles that are supplied by a specfici nerve root:
    • L2 Hip Flexion
    • L3 Knee Extension
    • L4 Dorsiflexion
    • L5 Hallux Extension
    • S1 Ankle PF, Ev and Hip Ext
    • S2 Knee Flexion
    • then test Reflexes (sees if problems comes from upper motor neurone or lower motor neurone):
    • Knee Jerk L3
    • Ankle Jerk S1
  • Neurological Integrity Testing (Lumbar Spine):
    • Palpation / PAVIMS:
    • Not part of Neurological Integrity Testing but could be used to tie findings
    • can help cement whether problems are coming from specific nerve root
