Energy

Cards (13)

  • the equation for calculating potential energy is PE = mgh
  • The SI unit for work done is joules (J)
  • The SI unit for power is watts (W) which is J/s
  • The SI unit for energy is joules (J)
  • The formula to calculate power is P = work done / time taken
  • The formula to calculate kinetic energy is KE = 1/2 x m x v^2
  • Energy is the capacity to do work
  • Potential energy definition
The energy a body possesses due to its position or condition. Three type of PE: gravitational potential energy, elastic potential energy and chemical potential energy.
  • The law of conservation of energy states that : "energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only converted from one form to another."
  • sources of renewable energy: wind, solar, tidal, geothermal, biomass
  • non-renewable sources of energy: nuclear energy, fossils fuels, oil, coal and natural gas.
  • Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in an object due to its condition, whether it is stretched, compressed or twisted. a stretched string and a compressed spring all possess EPE.
  • Gravitational Potential Energy (GPE) is the energy possessed by an object as a result of its height above ground level.
