Friction between Cavour and Gari

• At a meeting with Cavour and Victor Emmanuel , Garibaldi was given details of the plans for forcing war on Austria in 1859
• Garibaldi offered to recruit and train volunteers
• In spring 1859, the war against Austria had began
• The armies of Piedmont and France were badly organised , but the Austrian army was even more so
• French and Piedmontese troops conquered Lombardy
• Garibaldi with 3300 men, had performed well in war, winning a successful Alpine Campaign
• Garibaldi was sidelined, showing that Cavour didn’t trust him
