Gari conquered Sicily

• Garibaldi reached Marsala in Sicily on 11 May
• Garibaldi’s 2 streamers arrived alongside a detachment of Britain’s navy and the local commander thought Garibaldi was under British protection - benefited him
• Garibaldi advanced on Palermo, gathering support on the way and defending a Neapolitan army in hand in hand fighting
• The Thousand - numbering near 3000 reached Palermo
• End May- 20,000 enemy troops waited for them
• Austrian garrison withdrew to Naples and Sicily was his - his success outside the capital was held by that earlier revolt made the island chaotic- bands of peasants roaming about looking for revenge against Neapolitan troops
