Garibaldi needed to arrange a revolution in Naples in favour of Victor Emmanuel - failed - Victor Emmanuel gave orders to stop Garibaldi and his men from crossing the Straits of Messina to mainland - Garibaldi was too quick for him : dodging the ships sent to stop him : he ferried his men across the Straits to Calabria on 22 August
He was heavily outnumbered - Garibaldi fought his way North towards Naples
After he heard that the king of Naples left - he accepted its surrender, arriving there in advance of his troops by train
For the next 2 months, Garibaldi ruled a dictator over the Kingdom of Naples, unable to advance due to Neapolitan army in North
Garibaldi’s plan was to move northwards to Papal States and to Rome - complete geographical unification of Italy
