Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Dermatomes:
A
dermatomal
distribution of altered
sensation
or
pain
- an area of
skin
supplied by a
spinal
nerve
Assess with
cotton wool
– Different ways of performing, need to be
systematic
If
changes
found you will need to assess further i.e. sharp/blunt, hot/cold
Need to have knowledge of
peripheral
nerve distribution to be able to
differentiate
Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Dermatomes:
Need to have knowledge of
peripheral nerve
distribution to be able to
differentiate
with a
nerve root
Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Myotome:
A myotomal pattern of muscle
weakness
a muscle or muscle group supplied by a
spinal
nerve
Resist
and
hold
each movement for several seconds. Look for
strength
differences and strength
endurance
in some subtle cases
Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Myotome:
L2 – Hip Flexion
L3 – Knee Extension
L4 – Dorsiflexion
L5 – Hallux Extension
S1 – Ankle Plantar flexion, eversion & Hip extension
S2 – Knee Flexion
