Lower Motor Neurone Testing

Cards (4)

  • Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Dermatomes:
    • A dermatomal distribution of altered sensation or pain - an area of skin supplied by a spinal nerve
    • Assess with cotton wool – Different ways of performing, need to be systematic
    • If changes found you will need to assess further i.e. sharp/blunt, hot/cold
    • Need to have knowledge of peripheral nerve distribution to be able to differentiate
  • Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Dermatomes:
    • Need to have knowledge of peripheral nerve distribution to be able to differentiate with a nerve root
  • Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Myotome:
    • A myotomal pattern of muscle weakness a muscle or muscle group supplied by a spinal nerve
    • Resist and hold each movement for several seconds. Look for strength differences and strength endurance in some subtle cases
  • Lower Motor Neurone Testing - Myotome:
    • L2 – Hip Flexion
    • L3 – Knee Extension
    • L4 – Dorsiflexion
    • L5 – Hallux Extension
    • S1 – Ankle Plantar flexion, eversion & Hip extension
    • S2 – Knee Flexion
