  • Proclamation of 1763: British government declared that all lands west of the Appalachian Mountains were Indian territory; US didn't do this
  • Cherokee Nation: tribe assimilated to white settler culture, adopted colonial methods of farming, weaving, and building, developed a newspaper (the Cherokee Phoenix), and adopted a constitution
  • Manifest Destiny: belief that it was God’s will for America to expand its borders across North America
  • Ghost Dance: movement that white settlers would be driven out restoring lands and traditions to NAs, Ghost Dance dances and rituals were supposed to hasten the event
  • Túpac Amaru II: A descendant of the last Inca ruler who arrested and executed a colonial administrator, which led to a revolt against Spain. The revolt spread through southern Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina before Túpac Amaru II and his family were captured and killed
  • Napoleon III: took over Mexico with consers, Benito Juárez restored 3 yrs
  • Indian Removal Act of 1830: Spurred by the discovery of gold in 1829 on Cherokee land in Georgia; forced the Cherokee & other Southeast Native American tribes to relocate to Oklahoma
  • Sepoys: Indian soldiers under British employ; made up the majority of the British armed forces in colonial India by the mid-1800s; most were Hindus or Muslims
  • Indian Rebellion of 1857 (Sepoy Mutiny): rifle cartridges greased with a mix of the fat of cows & pigs; Britain win; marked the emergence of Indian nationalism
  • French intervened Mexico: Napoleon III allied with a group of Mexican conservatives to overthrow liberal government of Benito Juarez bc Mexico owed France money;Archduke Maximillian as king; Mexicans forced the French to retreat after a war and Juarez became governor
  • British est presence in India after the Indian Rebellion of 1857: exiled the Mughal emperor and established the British Raj (colonial government)
  • Indian National Congress: A group of British-educated Indians who aired grievances to the colonial government and called for self-rule
  • José Rizal: A young Filipino who studied abroad in Europe and started the Liga Filipina; Spain arrested and executed; but Liga was loyal to Spain.
  • Vietnam resist French colonialism:Emp Ham Nghi and his supporters criticized the French until captured and exiled; resistance continued under Phan Dinh Phung.
  • Philippine Revolution: Philippine independence against Spain;1896 revolts around Manila.
